Occupational Exposure to Biological Agents

Author(s): Brian Crook

Since humans became agrarians and therefore started to harvest and store crops, the potential for exposure to biological agents in large quantities associated with agriculture began. Any stored organic material – grain and vegetables for food, hay and straw for animal bedding, wood for fuel – can potentially be colonised by biodegrading fungi and bacteria. A person handling such microbially contaminated material could be exposed to aerosols of biological origin (commonly referred to as bioaerosols) capable of triggering an allergic response...

Application of Novel Molecular Biomarkers in the Occupational Medicine

Author(s): Pieranna Chiarella*, Delia Cavallo

The biological monitoring represents a useful tool for the health risk assessment of workers exposure in the occupational medicine. Exposure to dangerous substances, particularly to those that are carcinogenic for humans, represents a significant health hazard to workers who may develop malignant tumours following persistent exposure to toxic agents with carcinogenic properties.

Characterization of Airborne Emission of Nanoparticles from the in the Ceramic Industry in Portugal

Author(s): Esteves H; Bordado J; Gomes J*; Miranda R; Albuquerque P

The objective of this study was to evaluate occupational exposure to nanoparticles during some tasks performed in different production processes of different ceramic industries in Portugal, to select the places of greatest occupational exposure through the analysis of the sampled data, to verify what is the pulmonary accumulation in these places, to identify the composition of the released nanoparticles, apply a Control Banding Tool and try to understand which companies require more risk control measures.
