Color Vision in Medicine

Author(s): Anna Piro*; Antonio Tagarelli; Andrea Quattrone; Aldo Quattrone

The study of color vision is an interdisciplinary subject which embraces aspects of Physics, Biochemistry, Neurophysiology and Psychology. Light is absorbed by pigments in the photoreceptor layer of the eye’s retina initiating a photochemical reaction. By a transducer process, which is still largely a mystery, the various attributes of light energy are coded for transmission to the brain by neural signals; here the signals are later interpreted. The perception of color is a psychophysical experience which is dependent on the physiological coding and processing that takes place in the eye and brain. The fault which gives rise to defective color vision, lies in the retina and/or visual pathway.

Color Vision and Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus

Author(s): Anna Piro*; Andrea Quattrone; Aldo Quattrone

Neurosciences must changes the philosophy of mind, and to a great extent has already done so [27]. The problem of vision is the problem of knowledge, knowledge about the external world acquired through the sense of vision. One cannot unravel the first process, that of seeing, in any profound sense unless one unravels the second process, that of understanding what is seen, because there is no real division between the two.

Eyes on the Liver: Ocular manifestations of Liver Diseases

Author(s): Minna Rodrigo*; Wikrom Karnskul

The liver plays a crucial role in various functions of the body, including gluconeogenesis, detoxification, metabolism, energy storage, drug clearance, and fat absorption through the production and excretion of bile. Several disorders that affect the liver also demonstrate ocular findings. This can be seen in metabolic diseases where a toxic metabolite accumulates and causes subsequent visual impairment as well as abnormal ophthalmologic exam findings.
